Yes the G is the newer lens, however they are $900 + and if you find a used one they are around $700. The D is the older model that functions in every way as the G but does not have the Nano-Crystal coat and ED glass elements or VR. Here is a sample with the D lens.

Brucej67, This lens will not auto focus on your D3000 or D3001. They require lenses with the motor in the lens. The exposure will work correctly but you will have to focus it manually.

This lens will auto focus with camera bodies that have the drive motor and have a small screw driver that actually actuates the focus. All pro models and the D90 D300 D7000 D7100 etc.
