Hi All,
I had the opportunity to go to Yosemite last year at this time in February. We spent the day there enjoying the scenery and taking pictures. On the way out I noticed a bunch of photographers gathered together (see attached)near the Merced River looking across the valley. So naturally I had to stop and see why the fuss cause every where you look is a photo op. Anyway I get out my camera (Nikon D70 w/ a 18-70mm zoom lens) and by this time I had seen and shot several falls so I wasn't too impressed and what I believe is Bridal Falls from across the valley until someone shouts its turning colors now. Come to find later that the falls turns color by the angle of the sun near sunset 1 or 2 days a year in February. Next nite is was on NBC Nightly News with footage of the falls tuning orange and it looked like lava pouring off the rocks.
BTW I took a couple and these are not PP so if anyone would like to take a stab at enhancing them be my quest.

Beautiful shots.  Did you get to see the whole falls turn to liquid fire?
Keep up the good work.

Thanx AL, no I didn't witness the liquid fire but it was a great time to be in Yosemite and I'm gonna put it on my bucket list to be there again around February 20th so I can see the "fire"

Geosky, that is "Bridal Vail falls" and the event you refer to, is known as the "fire falls". You are correct that it happens once a year. Nice work on your part!

If you Google "Horsetail Falls" Yosemite you will find everything explained in detail and also the second link produced by the search has some wonderful images of the phenomena that only happens once a year in February.

This is not an example of the "Fire Falls".
The "Fire Falls" are no longer allowed in the park. They were discontinued many years ago. The exhibit was a large bond fire at the Glacier Point overlook. In the evening the coals from the fire were shoved off of the point to create a display for the people in the valley below. This is no longer done and hasn't been done in ages. The thing you photographed is a rainbow from the overspray of the waterfall at Bridal Veil Falls.

I am well aware that this is "not" the original "fire falls". The media seems to have given that name to this due to the sun feflecting off the water. I saw the original fire fall when I was a kid, camping there with my parents. Like I said, "I didn't name them such".
Beautiful without any enhancing. Great shots.

In about 1950,I watched the original "Fire Falls" from both the top, at Glacier Point, and at the bottow from Camp Curry. Wild days.
