Which lens are you using?

One critical part of macro capture is keeping as much of insect within Field of Focus as possible. A true macro lens has a flat FoF, called the Plane of Focus, so aligning insect parts is a bit easier than the Curved FoF of a standard lens. Practice will make this more apparent.

Excellent detail capture!

All I use is Picasa 3.9, especially the "Edit in Creative Kit" option. I believe these three wasp images stand well by themselves.

My "tweaking" order: exposure, contrast, (color) saturation, sharpening <SAVE>, then cropping and <SAVE> to new image.
That way, I can always go back to first tweaked Save, and crop for different size paper, if printing.

I rarely capture at MWD, because the DoF is so narrow. I prefer to work a bit farther away for better DoF, then crop after my PP tweaking.

ok,thanks doug, will give that a try the next time,I thought I had to stay on 1:1 for it to be true macro but I guess the cropping will adjust that, really appreciate the help.

Another thought is to try increasing the ISO setting so you can go with a smaller aperture which may help with DOF.

If you went to 400 ISO, you may be able to go with F8 or so and get more in focus as well.

I concur.
My average exposure at ISO 400 is 1/200-sec at f/16 (diffused speedlight at 1/4 power) or f/22 (diffused speedlight at 1/2 power).

The real trick/skill to macro/DOF and MWD is you have to flatten your lens to the subject. With the wasp, if you had been just a little higher and angled your lens down, then most of the face would have been on the same focal plane/same distance from lens. I takes time to learn, but more important to see the flatness in round objects. Here's an example shot at MWD. I have many more were I'm Flat to subject. In this shot, just above slightly looking down onto front paws and face.

I'm being tempted like Ulysses with the sirens to go over to the "dark side"-- just for that lens. ;-)
