A few suggestions:

Get the flash off of the camera. If you do that one thing your photos will improve greatly. The flash shadow can then be hidden behind the subject.

Always look at the background. In this case the window frame was distracting so I cropped most of it out. I should have cloned out the piece to his right leaving only the lines of the siding.

Rather than center the subject in the frame learn how to use the basic rules of composition....rule of thirds, golden mean, leading lines, etc. to direct the viewer's eye. In this case I redid the aspect ratio to square and added a vignette to highlight his eyes. I also cheated and cloned a catch light in his right eye from his left eye to add balance. I probably should have removed the second catch light from his right eye. See my tweak below.

I know there are purists out there who abhor post processing but truth be told, every digital image is processed one way (in camera) or another (post in an editing program).
