Good morning I am looking for a mid-range lens. I have read many of the reviews on the Nikon 24-120MM lens. The review indicate that this is good kit lens but not a pro lens, because of distortions, chromatic aberrations, vignetting, slow focus, and not very good in low light. Do anyone has any experience with this lens. I shot with a D800, D700, and D300.

Also, the reviews of the Nikon 28-300MM gets the same reviews as the 24-120MM lens, what say you?

Sounds like you want a 24-70mm F2.8

I have a 24-70MM and a 70-200MM, I need something a little lighter than the 70-200 and little more reach than the 24-70.

The 28-300mm will fill the bill. I have also seen some less than favorable reviews, but bought it anyway and it is now responsible for close to 80% of my everyday shots. If you think its not sharp, just download this image and look closely at it, yes, even the corners:

I sold my 24-120mm immediately after getting this baby when they first came out over 2 years ago.

Did you observe any problems with the 24-120MM?

The barrel distortion was noticeable and a bit hard to correct. It also was not as sharp as I wanted it to be. I used it on a D1X, D90 and D7000. I bought the 28-300mm lens WITH my first D7000 as they were introduced practically at the same time and I thought they would make a great pair. No regrets, especially since I moved to the D800's almost a year ago now.

MT, I hate to say it, but your post is a bit deceptive. You are referring to an older version of the 24-120 Nikkor, not the newer f4 VR version, correct? Reading your post people would think you are speaking of the current model lens.

I disagree - MT clearly states that he had this lens over two years ago.

For me: the 28-300mm is the 80% lens as MT agrees. It works on both my D7000 and my D800e. It is 450mm on the D7000 and 300mm on the D800 thereby exceeding the 200mm mentioned below.

For heavier times, on tripod only, the fantastic, expensive, pro 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses are the absolute best. And I can crop the dickens out of my shots with the 200mm on the D800e to reveal those far away birds in great detail.

I know you know the difference, but to keep from confusing the newbies might be better to use:

Well done MT. Lovely picture. Interesting advice. I also have a Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 with my D700. Like it.

I use a NIKKOR 18-200mm f3.5 VRII on my D300s which works well with no noticeable barrel flair. It is nice and sharp and have had good results. For a longer lens I use a NIKKOR 70-300mm f4.5 VR, but the 18-200 is mounted 95% of the time.

I absolutely agree! The 28-300mm is a nice lens and a multi-purpose one at that.
