Philadelphia Flower Show March 8-9

Attending the Phila. Flower Show soon and was kicking the idea of bringing trying to shoot some macro shots for part of the 2 days. Here's the rub:

I still don't have a speedlite and it's in a large convention center. Only camera flash. Also, tripod is not going to be practical. Handheld only.

Should I bother?

Yes. Here's what I suggest: cover your pop-up flash with a paper towel as a diffuser and give it a go. Try some at home to get your setting fixed.

Been there in prior years and there's lots of available light. You may need to crank up the iso and use a fast lens but it should work. Pop up flash won't provide uniform lighting for macro. May see you there - I have speed lights but intend to use available light.

I'm using a 50-mm stacked with 3 Kenko extension tubes. I don't know how fast it'll be. But I can crank up the ISO. Hope you can make it! The theme this year is "English Gardens".

Might be difficult to hold steady. I'll be using the 105mm vr macro with no extension tubes. Probably 1600 iso and f/2.8 - but we'll see what's needed. We should get UHH baseball caps for identification!!

Please check-out the UHH macro section and look at set-ups. There's no reason not to use the pop-up flash with diffusion. At least try it at home with the paper towel diffuser!

I went last year. It was very crowded, but still worth while. I found a monopod to be usable and very helpful.
Good luck!

I went last year, too. I think I overdosed on orchids. It was soooo beautiful. Can't wait for this year!

I have been to the Philadelphia Flower Show several times. It is usually so crowded that you would be lucky to get a close up shot of anything, let alone macro. It is usually beautiful there, but not an easy photo op.
