So why do you think New York City is the safest big city in America?
Could it be a mandatory three years in prison if you're caught in public with a loaded gun?
Something to think about.

Of course it doesn't work.
The liberals have no problem with giving up other peoples rights and their money.

I question some of the statistics given. For example it says 83% of Americans will be the victim of an attempted or completed crime in their lifetime. While this may be true it doesn't differentiate between white collar type crime, fraud, embezzlement etc. and violent crime, assault, murderer etc. It seems both sides of the fence use lies of omission to prove their point.

This is almost the only civilised country where the topic is still debated. In UK, Japan, most of Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, gun control has been so successful that its effectiveness is no longer debated.

In each of these countries, since gun control, homicides have come down to around 1 per 100 000 or less. In America it persists at 4 per 100000. Note, these are NOT firearms homicides exclusively, just homicides.

Those who oppose gun control try and confuse the issue by quoting sensationalist nonsense about levels of violence in the UK, or Australia for example. If you know anything about violence, then you know the homicide rate is a really good predictor for the real violence in a society. UK is slightly higher than most other countries on the list, but is still tame by American standards.

The only truth from NRA apologists, and one that is exploited ruthlessly, is that there is a volatile period in the period 1-5 years after gun control. During this period, some violent crime goes up. By ten years after gun control very few criminals ever carry weapons, homicide rates drop way down, and gun related deaths fall from numbers like 10 per 100000 down to less than 1.

Yes, gun control works and can be shown to be working.

However, I have seen so many eloquent arguments for keeping guns in America on this site, eg.

So that the Yankees can get their dues
So that the Liberals can be put against wall and shot
So that Obama and all who agree with anything he says....

I do not agree that the 2nd amendment is inviolate. The first Amendment is more clearly more important, and yet freedom of speech has been restricted where the personal freedom is outweighed by the negative impact on the greater population. Examples include certain obscene pornography and inciting mobs.

America is now at a point where over 30000 people die every year in due to fire arms. On a conservative basis, 8 people are deeply affected on average by each death. We are at a point where the right to bear arms so that we can form a militia is outweighed by the impact of 280million guns floating around the country making it trivial for anyone who wants to kill a few people to succeed.

Guns don't kill people, people do. But people kill far more people when guns are readily available because there is no other killing machine that comes close to having the convenience, utility, and deadly effect of modern firearms.

Only a tiny fraction of people actually need guns, and these catered for. Those who oppose gun control are as responsible for mass killings as the person who pulls the trigger. Nothing will stop mass killings entirely, but gun controls is proven to cut it right down.
