Will this be enough?

I thank you in advance for any advice given. I am a hiker who carries a D300. I am thinking of the Nikon 85mm Micro for shooting plant specimens during my outings. Would that lens and a ring flash be enough for 50% of the photo ops I might encounter during daylight hours?

I would say yes but remember its only my opinion just remember to take plenty of memory cards( they soon fill up) and a spare battery or two fully charged of course.the important part is have fun but stay safe esp when hiking.

If you are shooting plant specimens, I would add a tripod, cable release, and perhaps a macro focusing rail.... Camera, lens, ring flash is fine-- but I would not overlook the opportunities to shoot "au natural".....

I believe that this comparison thread will answer some of your questions:

FAQ: Why are there macro lenses of different focal lengths?

Native Columbine, photographed at 11,300-feet in the Upper Tomichi Valley, just shy of Tomichi Pass, Gunnison County, CO.
This is as colorful as wild Columbine become. Only hybrid, garden-grown Columbine are exotically bright colors.

Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400 with Nikkor 105D macro lens, 1/640-sec at f/16, Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment, synced for daylight exposure.

What macro-illumination set-up are you planning to carry?

Well as you can see, Nikonian72 doesn't need no stinkin' tripod!

I was hoping a macro ring flash would be sufficient but when I look at your beautiful Columbine photos I'm thinking that might not be enough.

One thing Nikonian72 does which creates beautiful natural looking flash photos is that he uses the correct outdoor exposure and then adds the flash. It's supplemental lighting-- not the primary light source.

My set-up is a standard APS-C camera (Nikon D5000), a standard medium macro lens (Nikkor 105G), a standard speedlight (Nikon SB-600), and a $30 O-flash diffuser attachment: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html#511426

On the Macro Forum, you will find at least six or eight different, but equivalent, field macro set-ups. Each & every base system can be easily modifies (customized) to fit your requirements.

What macro lens & supplementary macro illumination do you plan to carry on your Nikon D300?
Near-identical technique can be successfully applied to every field macro set-up.

Thank you for the advice. I am going to use your lighting setup so I won't have any excuses if my results need improvement.
Nikonian72, I really want to thank you and the others who helped with this question.

What speedlight for your D300? The proper O-Flash model number corresponds to the distance (in millimeters) from camera lens center to flash lens center. Find best price for correct O-Flash model on eBay. Also, consider an L-grip bracket for field use: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/70990-REG/Kalt_NPLBRACK_L_Flash_Bracket.html

The Kalt grip looks like a great idea, I have an SB700 I picked up on Craigslist last year.

A look through Macro Equipment Set-Ups at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html will show several macro-photographers with same Kalt grip. Your SB-700 is the replacement for the SB-600. Good choice.
