I finally got my pic with the color pop in B&W (not the best, but not bad for only having done this once before!). Now my question is---how do you work around the fine lines? I had a hard time doing the fine outline tracing with the mouse. What else is there to use?

Will try again later to attach pic---computer doesn't seem to want to cooperate this morning!

Check out a tablet digitizer wiith a pen. I use a Wacom.

http://www.wacom.com/en/Products.aspx

It is like using pen and paper. The pointing device (pen) is absolute, not accelerated like a mouse. You can also get one with both pen and mouse pointing devices which will auto switch modes based on which device is near the tablet.

They come in various sizes. Get the one with the best resolution if you want to do exacting work.

Good luck.

Dang, I just saw HDR video that showed a way to do what you want to do. I don't know Photoshop but from this video you don't need a tablet. There are settings that cause the software to trace out a border between color areas and then you do some layering things.

The example was where the interface between the sky and rocks had gotten fuzzed up by the HDR process and they were putting it back to the blue of the rest of the sky. So it was a complex shape.

I believe that the tutorial was a you-tube one on Elements. You might look there for one with HDR in the title to see it.

Regards,
Larry Leach

Before running out and buying a possibly unneeded program or a tablet (although I use one and love it), you should post a pic so "we" can see what you are trying to select. There are a number of ways photoshop can achieve this, including:

Magic wand
Quick Mask w/appropriate brush
Lasso
Magnetic Lasso
Pen tool (then converted to selection)

One of these most likely will work, depending on the image.
