Some people seem to want to ban guns altogether and some want complete freedom for anyone to own poses and use guns any time any place.
No one seems to question that you need a licence to drive a car. The licence indicates that you have demonstrated a level of competence to operate one safely. Children, the mentally challenged, and people who have demonstrated irresponsibility behind the wheel are restricted from operating a motor vehicle.
A fire arm can cause a lot of damage in the hands of a person who fits similar categories. People who have committed murder armed robbery made threats or have a violent criminal record should not have access to a firearm.
Law abiding careful drivers should continue to be allowed to drive automobiles and responsible firearms owners should be allowed to continue to do do so. As far as I know automobiles designed for racing on the track are generally not permitted on public highways. They are restricted in how they are used and by whom.
It is not unreasonable that certain weapons of mass destruction such as oozies and artillery should not be in the hands of the general public. Nor is it unreasonable that the persons who want to own firearms should be required to demonstrate that they can and do store them safely and that they will not use them for the purposes of committing a crime. here in Canada we have had gun control since the 1990s the positive thing that has come out of it is a demonstration that most of the gun crimes are committed by criminals who have no licence to own a firearm. So stop the fighting. Licensing and mandatory safe storage of firearms isn't going to harm lawful owners and the ownership of firearms by lawful responsible citizens is not going to et innocent people shot.
This polarity prevents anyone from winning the debate. The entrenched position of the NRA makes the people who want gun control that more determined to have it and to want it so restrictive no-one will be able to legally own firearms.
The people who want a complete ban on gun ownership make the firearm owners determined there will be no restrictions.
Surely reasonable adults can see the benefits of a compromise.
If the firearms had been safely stored in a locked cabinet, the Sandy Hook massacre would never have happened. Why weren't they locked up? There is no law requiring it although any responsible gun owner should have their guns locked away so children and irresponsible adults cannot get access to them.
Let me say in closing that the system in Canada is less than perfect. restricted and prohibited firearms still are used to commit crimes but those crimes are clearly committed by people who are not licensed to own the firearms in the first place. The number of accidental firearms deaths has declined mostly a result of people' like myself who have complied with the law and safely store my firearms in a locked cabinet.
So stop the bickering, sit down and draft some laws that everyone, except the criminals can live with.
