Owls and flash

After looking at the photography posted here I was over whelmed.
So I knew it was the right place for the question. I have an owl that visits a tree near me after dark. Is it safe (for the bird) to use a flash. I just upgraded to a 7D and have the EF-S lenses right now

The flash generally won't do any permanent harm to the bird but I would use it with restraint. Just like humans, it will lose its night vision for a period of time. Take a photo or two and then leave the bird alone to recover its vision.

What distance will you be from bird? What lens will you be using? Without condensing your speedlight illumination, it may make little difference at distance.

I use a Better Beamer to narrow my speedlight illumination pattern closer to my telephoto lens FoV.
