Having a tough time with this today. Nikon D7000 with Tokina 100mm macro lens with 56-mm of extension tube. Lots of flare and I'm loosing DOF as I up the magnification with the tubes. I had some at 3x but not real happy with them. I'm back to working full time, so I don't have loads of time to muster thru from start to finish. These were all shot at f/22 and with the extension tubes, diffraction is more a apparent. Will have to dial the aperture back, settle for less depth, but have sharper image I believe. Normal bugs are not as problematic as the jumpers with the fine hair and reflective eyes. Thought I would share as I struggle thru this.

Not a macro shooter, but definitely a spider fan. #1 is absolutely delightful!

I'm curious if you've compared a cropped 1:1 with an extension tube shot which duplicates the final image size?

I will crop a 1:1 mag, 16Mp photo down to 2Mp. Then I do the same with a photo taken with the tubes. From this I can see the lose in DOF and I can also see some diffraction when at f/22 with the tubes. Now I have shot with tubes at f/11 and Had Good Sharp photos, But DOF is even Less. I'm finding, as Blurryeyed explained before I started this adventure, that I have trade offs for more magnification. My quest of course is to find the Happy Balance between Magnification, DOF and Sharpness.

I am really liking that stripped spider... I think that I may have solved the problem that I was having with the flare on the tubes that I was using with the 28mm.... I simply put a strip of black velcro on the inside of the tubes and have not seen the flare, but I have yet to check it out in the field... but from the few shots that I did around the house it seemed to make a big difference. My biggest fear is something coming loose and interfering with the mirror or the shutter.. but the velcro ring I made is larger than the surrounding housing it sits in so I think that it will be pretty secure if I pay attention and handle the camera accordingly.

Yeah, I really like this little guy. Wish I could find more. I find almost as many large jumpers as I do of this little striper. No sure why the photos are darker than I posted. The flare was really intense today. Taken most of my shots off the side of a building the sun was on. In the shade I have no problems, just out in the sun. I will have to try something myself.

Amazed at the variety in the Jumpers you find. Any idea how many different ones you've identified?

No I haven't kept track. I actually need to go back into the archives and separate by Genus/species/male/female. I have at least 7 or 8 hundred jumping spider shots. I need to really clean out my whole Macro Sections. As your shots get better the older ones just don't hold up. I can hardly wait for the Robber flies to return and add a few hundred more shots. Glad I have 2TB storage on this computer.
