Look close to me.....nice photos. 8-)
The skipper is on Lantana & that flower is a favorite of many insects. It's one of the best around for attracting insects. As for the advantages of IS (or OS or VR depending on the OEM)...I don't have any lens with it & I know that most lens makers say that the closer to life size, the less effective IS (and AF) become.... I opt for faster lenses as opposed to image stabilization due to the ability of fast apertures to blur out distracting backgrounds. Stabilization works well if you are prone to camera movement, but cannot control any subject movement. Thus, it becomes a matter of what's more important to you as an individual...

Scott is an excellent macro-photographer, but much younger than you or I. He has no empathy for age-related hand-tremor.
When I say that my keep-rate dramatically improved with VR, I am speaking from experience.
Much younger I don't know (I'm 63) but no, I don't have problems with hand tremors...Shame Nikon hasn't come out with a body VR system as opposed to a lens based system. That would be the best of both worlds as the fast lenses like my F1.4's would be even more versatile...
