extension tubes question

My extension tubes are on order so I cant experiment yet.
Q. As tubes increase magnification does this mean you can increase the distance between the lens and the subject to increase DOF and still get 1.1.
Can you achieve comparable results with 1.4 teleconverta to tubes?

Magnification increases and DOF decreases. I cannot comment on 1.4 tele...as I do not own one.

I hope you purchased auto-extension tubes, which will allow your lens to remain A-F & Auto-Aperture.

LRF got it right: extension tubes = shorter MFD.

You didn't mention the lens you intend to use with your extension-tube set, but let's assume a 50mm, for discussion.
Your lens-to-subject distance will still decrease as you approach a 1:1 magnification. As this distance decreases, so does your depth-of-field, as stated above.
With your extension tubes you will no longer be able to focus on distant subjects, only close-up subjects.
Your 1.4 teleconverter will increase your magnification while maintaining your close-focus ability. So if your lens was able to focus to (say) 11 inches, it will still be able to do that, but your subject will appear closer than it appeared without the teleconverter.
I hope you'll have a ton of fun with these things!

I hope you share some of your shots and explain what you did as it would be helpful to many of us that aren't quite sure how this all goes together. Mike

Hi Olcoach yes I will post pics and a note or two of the learning curve with the extension tubes. All the Hoggers in the macro section have already helped me with this and can advise you much better than I can. As an eager learner I can pass on my errors in the hope you can avoid them. UHH Great learning forum.

If your a DOF freak like me you will notice a drop in depth. When using tubes you loose light getting to the camera. The more tubes you stack the less light, and this slows your focusing way down with your camera and lens. I only use manual focus now for spiders and such. Metering is not important if you've done any macro work at all, you know what to set the flash on. Now if your a tripod kind of person the auto's work great as your not trying to nail the shot before the bug takes off. If you hand hold your shots, you might want to up your shutter speed just a bit and try to brace your lens, hand, body as any movement will result in blurry shot, a lot more difficult than just the 100mm. I can get 80 to 90% with the 100mm, only about 30% with a set of tubes hand held. You have less working distance which means less of subject in frame. You end up looking for smaller and smaller subjects. They are fun to play with, but you'll learn they have limits.

I'm finding with a full set of tubes you focusing is Slowed way down, due to lack of light. Your camera and lens is searching much slower. I use manual focus as I don't want the subject to fly or crawl off. But you do need the Auto Aperture
