Nothing to write home about but I thought I'd show the first shot with my 105mm Nikkor macro lens with R1C1 flash ring. I think I'm gonna have fun.

Why the vignetting on the ruler photo? A Nikkor 105-mm lens at MFD, will capture a field 23.6-mm wide. Your image is 18.5-mm wide, which is higher magnification than 1:1. Did you add an extension tube?

I'm wondering if the vignetting on these photos is from the R1C1 flash ring attachment "stacked" on a filter on the 105. I have this flash kit but have never noticed vignetting.

Makes sense. Still wondering about 18.5-mm field-of-view.

My guess is he had the 36mm ext tube attached-- or more and not @ 1:1....

Something is going on... The only place that I see that is in a stacked lens... I wonder if it is the housing for his flash, maybe he did not have the proper adapter.

You are right. 60mm extension tube. About 2:1?

Less than 2:1.
At 2:1, your field of view would be about 12mm on a cropped sensor and 18mm on a FF sensor.

To acquire 2:1 magnification, you need 68-mm extension on a 105-mm lens.

105-mm MWD field of view on DX sensor = life-size
105-mm MWD field of view on DX sensor = life-size...

105-mm MWD field with 68-mm tubes on DX sensor = 2:1 magnification (2x life-size)
105-mm MWD field with 68-mm tubes on DX sensor = 2...
