Chicago makes St. Louis look Amish, 512 murders
Willing to bet the stats are, if not mirror image, similar

St. Louis is much smaller than Chicago...Our Urban Flight has dwindled our population down to under 400K...Closer to 300K than 400K. Per Capita we are often listed as Murder Capital of the U.S. Back when I was on the streets of STL as a patrol officer we averaged over 300 murders a year...in the 70s. Our officer population has also been downsized to about half what it was in my day...yet, even with the smaller population, we still have as many or more major crimes as in the 70s.

The restoration on the old court house is done and all the scaffolding is gone now. Did you know that it is reputed to be haunted? It is the site of the Dread Scott Decision from the 1800s addressing slavery, where a slave (Scott) sued for his freedom.

As for the ball park...today construction began on "Ballpark Village" which should be completed by the 2014 season. A venue of Entertainment and Restaurant locations built on the site next to the stadium on the site of the old stadium. 100 million dollar project.

Thanks, Heart.
And Mr. imntrt1 - I did not know that about Dread Scott but that is great information. Thanks for letting me post and lightening up the conversation. I stopped in SL in June on my way to CO and got lost in a not so nice area - it was quite desolate looking - but the city has a lot to offer - maybe someday they will rehab like they've done in Baltimore.

St Louis has its problems, but it does have a lot to offer. I love the old architecture and it used to have many "neighborhoods" that were unique in their own right. Some are still hanging on and have yearly events, Soulard(Diverse), Dog Town(irish), The Hill,(Italian) come to mind. There are some attempts to rehab some of it and I hope they are successful...but the prospect is slim at best.

Baltimore had lotteries for $1 houses - had to stay with orig owners, be occupied in a stated time frame, etc. But it worked! Some of those neighborhoods got very chi chi. However, some neighborhoods that used to be lovely are occupied by (fill in the blank) now and they are getting shabbier each year. I live in the neighborhood I grew up in, and it breaks my heart that I may have to move before I go out horizontally!

Know exactly what you are saying. St. Louis had a program a few years back where you could buy an abandoned home for pennies on the dollar....had to rehab them in an allotted time period. But it kind of died off and I haven't heard about it for years now. St Louis has it yuppie neighborhoods, but I think many of the residents go into them with blinders on and not knowing what they are really getting into. I joked with my son a few years ago that we could move into the city, but I didn't want to shoot my way in and out of the house everyday. The Soulard and Dog Town neighborhoods are still livable, but they are rapidly declining. The Hill area is still occupied by many old settled Italian families and seems to be holding its own. I would love to live in Dog Town (Irish) but there again, you would never recoup the cost of a house there, or in Soulard. Both are surrounded by areas that no prudent man or woman should be in without being armed.

Baltimore's Little Italy section is surrounded on 3 sides by public housing - but they hold their own - Italians look out for each other, but the younger generations are moving to the suburbs, too. It is just what happens.
