Hummers wintering in Oregon

Kenny Loc: Oregon

Yes, there are hummingbirds that live in Oregon all year round. They are Anna’s Hummingbirds. In the sunlight, rare in the winter, their heads are bright red from reflected light. This poor little thing was spotted during a rainy day in the top of a tree about 30 feet high, looking very wet and cold. During the cold they reduce their heart rate from a normal 500 beats a minute to about 5 beats, which enables them to survive, a state similar to hibernation.

Wet and Cold
Wet and Cold...

They do go into a state of torpor to conserve body heat. It's an amazing thing. Beautiful photo!
