Bird Identification....
Can anyone tell me what kind of bird this is. I am thinking some kind of finch, but the little red spot on its head makes me wonder...
thanks for the help.
Looks like a female of the Redpoll family. Could be either a Commom or Hoary.

Thanks! yes i believe it is. I will watch closer for her and maybe I can determine which it is and get a better picture! thanks for looking :)
We have also had them here in Chester, Nova Scotia. According to my Bird Book, they are native to Northern Canada up towards the Arctic. We have a flock of about 25 of them coming to our feeders. Pretty little things, easily spooked.
We figure the ones here are common redtolls.

And here is a whole bunch of 'em!
red poll feeding frenzy
Wow! There was a bird at our feeder this morning that we could not identify. Guess what? After seeing this posting, we have identified it as the common redpoll. And, we didn't have it on our life list. Thank you.
The word hoary i am not familiar with to describe a redpoll.
Over here they are called lesser redpoll and mealy.
howdysmom: looks like the same sort of thing at our feeders as well. I know they come a little south in the winter, but this is the first time I have ever seen them in these parts. I hope they stay as they are fun to watch especially at the 6 hole feeder we have and there is about 25 of them here. I just wish my camera would shoot faster than 1 FPS.

howdysmom: Where are my manners, thanks for posting this fun picture. My shots are not near as good.
