I'm planning a suprise trip for the wife in April. She hates the heat of summer, that's why April. I am trying to decide between the Outer Banks area or Myrtle Beach. We have been to neither, so I'm not sure which to choose. I have checked the "averages" for April at weather.com, and they are about the same, high 60's, low 70's. I had a show this fall were the lighthouse shot was a big hit. I had no idea people liked lighthouses that much. We were told that Myrtle Beach has many. Also, we could spend a day in Savannah, GA, a place my wife has always wanted to go. The Outer Banks seem a little cheaper, and are a little closer. I'm sure we'll have fun where ever we go (we always do), but I thought you'll (yinz) could give me some advice.

Thanks for the help.

There are many lighthouses but they are in the Outer Banks, not Myrtle Beach. The outer banks is a great area

No real light houses at Myrtle Beach at all. It's still a great place to visit.

No lighthouses in Myrtle Beach except on the putt-putt courses. Charleston,Hunting Island near Beaufort and Savanah have some nice ones

Quite some years ago as a family, we went to Atlantic Beach over several summers. If you are a beach person (I'm not) my family says it was great. Not much else to do there.

I live in NC near the SC state lines and have been to Myrtle Beach many time, Outer Banks only occaisionally. The beach and ocean itself at Myrtle is beautiful, but it's very "touristy" with lots of houses blocking the view. I guess I'm a little bored with it. The Outer Banks is breathtaking and there's plenty to see and do. Also much more expensive but to me worth it.

Pigpen.... Just so that you know, that we know.... Your "In Hiding" location has been compromised with that Yinz. There are too many Yinzers out here. Some transplanted, but always a Yinzer.

Have a nice trip with the wife.

I love Beaufort SC - easy drive to Savanah and Charleston (don't miss) from there. 1st trip two years ago Oct. - drove & stayed with friends in Beaufort on water - beautiful town - took lots of day trips - Hunting Island Lighthouse - want to go back. I am not a beach person either. Lots of photo ops - history.

I went to the Outer Banks last July to shoot the lighthouses. Because it was a business trip I ran out of time to complete shooting all of the lighthouses so I will be going back sometime next year. You will not be disappointed.

Lots of good advice here already on visiting the SC and NC coast. As said, Myrtle Beach is a golfer magnet (50 some courses) but otherwise it tends to be crowded and tacky -- think putt-putt courses with giant volcanos and gorillas. Myrtle Beach biker weeks can offer much camera fodder, both the polished custom cycles and their photogenic riders. If you happen to be into that, I don't figure you could beat the great shots you might get in a few days there. Of course, motels and restaurant space may be hard to find just then.

I would totally skip Myrtle Beach as it's a major tourist trap and not scenic at all. I've never been to the Outer Banks but have spent much time in the SC low country as they call it and would highly recommend Charleston and Savannah.

Have been to both areas, if I had to choose I'd go with the Outer Banks. No matter which place you choose have a wonderful vacation and post pics.

Sounds like it's unanomous. If you haven't been to Outer Banks you'll especially love it. Isn't Spring Break in Apri? You definately don't want to be in the middle of that! Teens own Myrtle Beach at Spring Break! You can't get thru town, or onto the beach, and would have to fear for your life if you did.
