Was the 18-55mm at 18mm or 55mm?

Your stack-reversed lens needs to have the largest aperture possible. On a zoom lens (longer than a prime of same length), f/2.8 may not be large enough.

I just checked my 18-55 with a 55mm stacked on it and it did the same thing but the 55 stacked on a 50mm did not.

Physical length of lenses are different.

The 28mm will be wide open/the lens you are reversing. Now take an adjust both lens/focus and see if the vignette will disappear or most of it. When I have the 100mm and reverse the 35mm on to the 100 I have vignette at infinity on the 100mm. As I focus in, about half way I lose the vignette. Sounds like you need to focus the 18-55mm Also make sure you have the 18-55mm closed down to f/11 to F/22

I had this when I reversed a 28mm on my 90mm Tamron, I put it down to the massive gap on the mounting (the tamron lens recess is large) but I was also told to make sure I leave the tamron wide open and use the reverse lens to control aperture.

I've never got to play with the setup again, figured need to get practice with just the macro before getting fancy

No you leave the reverse Lens wide open and adjust the aperture with the lens attached to the camera.

I concur. This is why a "fast" reversed lens is best.

Also you can not see out of the reversed stacked lens beyond f/11 or so, to dark. Also the lens on the camera will close down/to the aperture you set in a split second/ when you pull the shutter button as it always does. It's wide open the whole time your viewing. Not sure if everyone knows that.

The primary lens is seeing the rear housing of the reversed lens because the aperture even wide open is still somewhat small... For Lens stacking I would recommend something like an old 50mm f/1.4 reversed onto your 100mm macro lens... the issue will go away.
