Have finally took a few pics in raw. Should i see a difference pre editing as i cannot. I have downloaded faststone to do it.
If you are not going to do post processing in an editor, shooting raw is a waste of time. You should just shoot jpeg. If you are going to do pp, shooting raw will give you the image without any compression and a lot more information for editing.
I will be doing post processing but just wanted to know should i see better quality beforehand? Thanks, Tom.
When compared to a in camera processed jpeg. all settings being equal, it won't look as good. It has to be converted and then tweaked. Depending on the adjustments used to take the picture determins the amount of tweaking that will be necessary to bring out the best the photograph has to offer. The RAW does give you more information and detail to work with.
Thanks a lot for that. Could i ask another one. Having took jpeg and raw side by side and transferred both to my usb memory stick the raw one has not showed, any idea why?

Do you have a raw file converter or raw file reader? You will also need to make sure it's updated with the latest version if you are using a newer camera.
Not got a clue what they are. The pics transferred to computer okay but then not to usb stick.
Adobe makes a dng converter for free. Download it and convert the raw to dng and then you shouldn't have a problem with the flash drive seeing it.
Thanks a lot, will give that a go.
Did not seem to work, does it have to be compatible with the card pics are on?

The file system on the memory stick is probably FAT32 which has a 4gb file size limit.
You can work around it by converting the memory stick to the NTFS file system.

What??? A file is just a bucket of bits - file type has nothing to do with the fact that it is not showing up on the stick. It doesn't matter whether it is a .nef, .cr2, .dng or .doc or .xls - the file system is just copying or moving bunches of bits.
