In 2009, I took a photo of an owl in a tree in our backyard. Not knowing what kind it was, I sent it to www.owling.com for identification. It turned out to be a Northern Saw-whet owl. They asked for permission to include it on their website.

Move on to 2011. This photo was chosen for November in the Ontario (Canada) SPCA calendar.

Now, fast forward to 2012. The US magazine, Natural History, saw this photo on the website and asked for permission to publish it in their November 2012 issue.

Yes, I am "tooting my own horn" and I offer no apology. It may well be the only photo I'll ever take to be published.

Excellent. And just think - that was without even trying! The image sold itself. You might want to think about what else you might have in your collection waiting to be published :)
