Has anyone tried GIMP photo editing software? The advertisements say it's a free download and is compared to the $699.00 version of Photoshop.

While I do not use it myself, it has been discussed almost to death on the forum. A quick search from the search button above will reveal many pages of discussions on it.
It's good program.....has the basic commands as photoshop but not near as powerful

Thanks for the input. I should have used the 'search' button before I posted the question.
Give PaintShop pro X5 a look - you won't be sorry!

http://www.gimp.us.com/index.phpI started with Gimp and was satisfied with it. I later went with PotoShop and found very little difference in the two. I kept Gimp on my machine but do not use oit any longer. I mainly use Elements 10 and 4 other programs but as I said still have the Gimp on my machine.

That's what many think. Like most open source apps it is meant to be very customizable. When you consider it has nearly 1000 plug-ins it can be more powerful!
I'm a GIMPer and recommend it, take some of that $700 you saved and subscribe to PareandFocus.com for $12 a yr. The owner (Kat Landreth) is a member here and her excellent e-book makes GIMP dead easy!

http://www.gimp.us.com/index.phpThe GIMP is an adequate image editor, but it isn't quite up to par with the power and smooth function of Photoshop. However when it comes to features GIMP still has most of the features Photoshop has. There are tons of free add-ons and plug-ins for GIMP that - if collected correctly, could
almost equal Photoshop.
In the end I believe the GIMP is a far better bang for your buck

get the best of both worlds. go to adobe.com/downloads and download creative suite 2 (which includes photoshop cs-2) for FREE. I do not know how much longer it will be up, but if you hurry it might still be there. even if you think it might be a bit much, you cans also download for free elements 5. save photoshop cs-2 on your hard drive for later use if need be.
