It is a red one and is used for illumination. Sorry Tom had to say it.
tainkc...Are you quizzing us??? For someone who appears to be a railroad afficionado, I'll bet you know the answer. Wasn't it used by the brakeman to signal the engineer?

Good shot!
I HAD one just like it, but I hung it on the hand of a 4 ft tall, concrete jockey in front of my barn and someone stole the statue. It weighed about 400 pounds, had to take 2 to pick it up and load it and it must have tipped over when they lifted it, because they knocked a hole in the front of the barn getting it.

I don't think so. Could be. It is only about 10 inches tall.
Not a railroad latern. Just a plain old latern you could buyu at the hardware store. And it is a cheap one at that. You would use it in the barn or for camping. See them at farm auctions all the time and they go cheap. - Dave

I thought it was along those lines. I think we paid 50 cents for it at a garage sale.
Tom this is a blue one,it also illuminates, but should not be confused with the red one, your red one is real,my blue one is a 5$ knockoff, but it works....sorta...smokes a lot...Tim

Not so sure about that, that blue one is 15 years old and is no where near the quality of Tom's red one, the only markings on the blue, is made in China, Oh and pariffin only, but I use lamp oil....That's why it smokes.

They were refered to as Coal Oil Lanterns and were used for
lighting. Back then instead of filpping a switch one would flip a match.
