Long way to go.

D3100/Tamron 90mm. Yep, long way to go, but I'm working on it (can't wait for my ring flash). I know these are not sharp & leave a lot to be desired. Both are ISO 3200/f22/A 1/60/pop up flash, hand held.

I can stage similiar shots indoors, using a tripod, under ideal conditions & get perfect focus & exposure, but there is no satisfaction in that. I want to aspire to taking good macros, hand held, outdoors. That is my main goal right now.

Maybe it's just me, but I like them! If there is anything wrong with them, don't tell me!

Try this combo.. ISO 320, Shutter speed 1/200 aperture F/18 to F/22. Use the pop up flash a coffee filter wrapped around it to help or make some sort of diffuser from the ones I posted you last week. Also learn how to turn your flash up and down so you can make adjustments when needed. Most important get that shutter speed up and turn that ISO way down.

Understand what you say, fstop. It was extremely low light so couldn't get any help from ambient light. Because I am so close to subject, most of the built in flash is wasted going over the top of the subject. Hence, if I drop the ISO or the shutter speed to 'acceptable' levels, the result is way too dark under these conditions-fine in bright sunshine.

My ring flash should arrive this week-then I'll be working around your figures. Thanks for your advice.

I think that fstop22 has given you some good advice, the biggest problem that I see with this photo is the graininess because of the jacked up ISO... Diffused light will give you detail that will otherwise be burned out.. Fstop22 probably used his popup flash more extensively than anyone that I am aware of on the forum before he moved to a speedlite so his suggestions are probably a really good starting point..
