Hi, everyone - there was such nice backlighting and no flash allowed - and had to shoot quickly - any suggestions welcome. These were processed in Smart Photo just now.
Feel free to correct & share.

Very interesting. Would love to see them larger.

Why would they not allow photos? Have been there several times and the only place I wasn't allowed to take photos was inside the house.

Photos OK but no flash! Got some pics of the furnace. Flash was not allowed in case the light distracted him while doing something critical.
Love the interior only shot best but all are great!

Nice pictures, but the shadows say "Flash" or there was some kind of spotlight or something behind the photographer. Please check the shadows and the highlights on the anvil, etc.
Biltmore is a "magical" sort of place. I have been an annual passholder for about 15 or 20 years. Try to get there several times each year. Always something new to see and do.
Hi, Grumpy
Are you sure you don't mean the grindstone??? Maybe I was standing in the light - have no idea but I can assure you I did NOT use a flash -

Looks like a pretty large window or door behind him.
Yes, Larry there was and it created a glare in a lot of the photos - I was glad when he bent low. This was about 4 in the afternoon. Here is an example.
Jeanbug - I did not say no photos - No flash.

Sorry, I did not make myself clear. In the first two pictures, there are clear shadows behind the blacksmith's arms and under his chin, etc. Look on the wall behind him and even check out the shadows behind the small wood pile on the left of the photo. Also, there is a great highlight on the left side of the anvil, the "pointy" part.

The other shots don't show any of those shadows, Grumpy. Why is that ?? Also, the two windows were casting light from two directions when he was at the bench - the only thing moving was me - moving around behind the rope trying to stay out of everybody's way.

Why is that???? I have no idea. I didn't take the pictures. I only know the shadows are there. The highlights are there. Flash or no flash, the shadows are there and it at least "appears" that a flash was used. Maybe there was a strong light source behind you. I can't answer that for you. I do know that in some cameras the flash is automatic and many people do not even realize that the flash is operational. I do not know what kind of camera was used or what the settings on the camera were. BUT, as we all know, mechanical and electronic devices sometimes have a mind of their own!!! Thanks for the response. I did not mean to start an argument; I was only stating the obvious as to the shadows.
Grumps,
I am glad you have a good eye. I shoot with a D90 and DO know about the buttons (LOL). I also know that I even asked permission to shoot, because NO ONE else was. And I certainly would never shoot w/flash (SB-600) at someone who is working!
Also, I never mind a little discussion as long as it is respectful, as you and I are. We learn and grow from the discussions.
Thanks Bebo, I also have had some rather "strange and unexplainable" things show up in some of my pictures.
A D90 is not a beginner camera, so I am confident that you are more knowledgable than the "average bear." I shoot Canon, so could not explain much about the Nikon family of cameras anyway; even though I worked in a camera store for several years.
The pictures are good and especially after the photoshop stuff, which I struggle with all of the time. I still prefer film only because that is how I learned and I know film much better than digital; and I fight with my computer almost every day ---- we don't get along well. (TEE HEE)
