First: I have googled, I have read reviews and comparisons, I've watched you tubes and am no closer now than before. My 13 year old grandson has the opportunity to raft the Colorado River this spring. He is really quite good with my Nikon DSLRs, but they aren't going on any river trip. I need something versatile enough to zoom, shoot stills and video, water and drop proof good to ten feet, and affordable. (no more than $350.00) On his return, I expect to give him either the d40 or d70, and I will keep the P&S for my glove compartment. I am partial to Nikon, but many of the reviews praise Olympus and Canon over Nikon, and Fuji is the least expensive. I'm getting weary, and so now if anyone has experience with these, please offer advice.

I will restrict my response to Nikon, but there are a lot of other waterproof cameras out there. I suggest the ORANGE Coolpix AW100, price under $300:

I have an Olympus Tough series camera. Waterproof to 30 feet, shock proof fall from 6 feet operates to 14 degrees f. Am very please with its' picture taking quality. Us it whenever I go kayaking or am in wet environments
Thank you. It used to be the triad was Nikon, Pentax, Canon. Now Pentax barely gets a mention. It looks like something for consideration.

I took a Canon D10 through the rapids on the Colorado in the Grand Canyon two years ago. Got lots of great images. Just last week I used it snorkeling off the coast of Panama. Got a few good images, but I found it difficult to use under water. Mostly it was point and pray.
I have a Canon D10. Took a little practice, but I got some good underwater photos.

I have the Canon d20 and found it great. Used it in Aruba under and above water, under a waterfall. It worked great as were the pics.
