Most beginner macro photographers have a problem calculating DOF. Here's the best way ever to overcome all those "Guestimates"

In macro-photography, the DoF is so shallow, that I know to focus just behind leading edge of subject, to carry front surface, and as deep as possible behind focal plane. I often take more than a dozen "identical" hand-held images, just to get that one image with properly captured Dof, which best carries subject.

This image of a pupating caterpillar is a prime example of favorable DoF capture.

If you plug numbers into this calculator you will see it's flawed. Shows the same DOF for f/11, f/16, f/22. When using 100mm Lens at 7 inches working distance calculator states 0.04 inches, that's thinner than a match book cover. Angle and squareness to subject influences the DOF even more than the actual aperture you use beyond f/11. Even at the highest Aperture, focal plane is king in Macro. You have to work macro to understand it.
