What's up with the Nikon EL14 battery?

Yes, as I noted many of the cheaper ones now say they will not work with the D3100 and D5100. Apparantly they do work with the coolpix.

I am wondering why. My local battery store theorized the voltage may differ. I don't think that is it.

Some speculate a conspiracy theory: some kind of check in those cameras that rejects ones that don't have Nikon in their electronics. One guy kind of tested that by using it as the second battery in one of those two-batttery hand grip things...and it did work as the second battery.

I suspect it may be the power (current draw) needed by these cameras. I have a thing that uses triple A batteries. It didn't work with one brand of battery. I called the company and they told me I had to use Duracell batteries because all the others had some kind of current limiter in them. Sure enough it worked with Duracels. It may be something like that.

Larry Leach

Larry, you might want to check out keh.com which sells used camera equipment and stands by their products. I just checked for my battery and found it for $25, however, what kept me from purchasing was a $9.98 FEDEX shipping charge which was the cheapest method offered. I contacted them about offering cheaper methods, but haven't heard from them yet.

Hi, Folks

I have a Nikon D5100 and need an extra battery for it. It uses the EL14. So does the D3100.

I have noted a bunch of EL14 knock-offs on sale for as low as under $10. Many say they do not work with the D3100 or D5100, so I assume none of them do.

Does anyone know why they do not work?

Then I went back to Adorama and B&H and find they are all out of stock on the real one. And the only one available on Amazon has upped the price from $39 to $69.

Is this some kind of Nikon monopoly scam or something?

Opinions are fine but any actual information (e.g. refrence to a report from Nikon or independent source with actual data) would be more appreciated. ;-)

Larry Leach

Thanks.

I just found one on B&H. I am pretty sure they said they were out also a couple of days ago but at least now they claimed to have them. $39. I know they are reputable.

The shipping was less than $5.

So the immediate problem is solved. I still wonder the two things; i.e. what seemed to deplete the market of the Nikon ones and why it is that the knock-offs don't work with these two cameras. But for now I don't really need those answers.

It will be interesting to see if they show up again at the other sources. Maybe a ship came in or something.

Everyone must have gotten re-stocked at the same time.

I ordered from the Nikon store and have confirmation of shipping, when 24 hours ago, virtually everyone was backordered.

Interesting indeed.

I'm liking the Tsunami theory. It would have taken a while for the supply chain to dry up. As it did people like me would be looking around wherever they can find one thus gradualy depleting all sources. Well, most. There were one or two sources that bumped the price to $69, I suppose because they knew what was happening. Then it took a while for the supply chain to refill.

Thanks for all your inputs.

I already ordered from B&H, though.

I find with Amazon there price changes a lot! go figure!
why did you need a new battery anyway...did the other one die or you just need a spare? the reason I ask is because I have the D3100 and find I need to recharge it more than I ever had to on my D40 camera.

Hi,

I just wanted a spare.

I have found the battery life on the D5100 to be awesome but it will have limits. I usually use the viewfinder...that is one of the reasons I wanted an SLR. I haven't used it for movies yet either but expect to do so. Doing so will use up more battery because you have to use the screen to do movies.

We are retiring and plan to do a lot more trips in our travel trailer. I usually don't camp places with power and don't like to use my generator. I ran out the battery on my preferred camera on our trip to Mt. Rushmore and return through Yellowstone last June. I don't want that to happen again.

I also picked up a car charger for the El14 for $5. I tested it and it works. It actually came with a fold out 110 plug as well so it is an addition to the one that came with the camera. The same places that sell the EL14s that don't work in the D3100 and D5100 sell the car chargers. They do work on the Nikon EL14.

Have 2 friends that work at plants that depend on parts from the far east and they are down to working 20 hours a week because they can't get the parts they need. Not telling you what to do but everytime I buy a new camera I buy 2 backup batteries for it. Use all Nikon equipment and have never had to replace a battery. Something to think about for the future......

Had similar results with a knock off I got on Ebay...wouldn't hold a charge! Just purchased a battery by Promaster for my T2i from a local camera shop for $50, lifetime warranty. The Canon battery was $20 more, with only a yr warranty. Good battery...so far anyway...time will tell.

That's the nice thing about Promaster batteries and memory cards is that lifetime guarantee. The shop where I go will give you a new one on the spot, no having to send into company---good deal.........

Try Dury's Cameras in Nashville. They will send it to you. durys.com or 615-255-3456. I bought that battery from them a few weeks ago and it was a nikon product.
