Pro contest have 2 surfers for about 30min or more, so you see a lot of the same. Need the week to shoot high competitive shots. 500mm serious needs for this kind of shooting. Along with 70-200 f2.8 especially late in the day.
A good 70 or 100 to 300 will work. Shot these with a Sony A77 and sal55200 f4-5.6. had to use the tel conveter. Some are only 6 mp. The cam works, but better lens would be nice. Low ca and high mag.
200mm allow crop. 24mp cam I can do that.
A 300mm 2.8 for Sony would be great to rent. can get really close to the Water with that lens and keep shoot for 1/2hr. no trouble. Always work with a tripod at height of me. To reduce water intrusion. I work out there, so I shoot not low to the water. When I shoot sports I don't go for the creative shot. To much action. If I was relaxing at the beach I get much softer look.

From one who attends many surf comps, congrats from me, you have done very well here, considering the small surf, your obviously some distance from your subject, but captured it as well as possible, most look quite sharp to me, impressive.
