There is a lot of over exposure in the faces especially, 1 and 2 need cropping also, and as well as over exposure in three the foreground is VERY intrusive, and poor, the last is far too over exposed in her face, he is OOF and the eyes are drawn to the red berries.

Personally I would have used a hand held meter and taken an incident reading.
You say your first engagement shoot, is that as in "they just got engaged" or you were engaged and paid! to shoot these

If you are going to shoot more ES, I too would encourage an incident meter. BUT, try to stay away from 10am-4pm shooting as well. If you have too, use reflectors balance the sun and/or flash to overcome the sun.

I like nice overcast days, the sky is a wonderful soft box.

Looks like the couple had fun, that's important. Pay close attention to the surroundings and make sure they are the key focal point.

I tend to agree with all the comments from JR1...but I would really like to know if this was a paying job. If you were doing this as a favor, I'm sure the couple is extremely grateful. If not, I'd be asking for a reshoot. We're these taken at high noon, because the overexposure is pretty apparent in all of them. If you can't get the exposure correct in the field, at the very least, take a look at your histogram when editing them to make sure that you're not blowing the highlights or shadows...it's an easy fix in LR4.

Oh and in 4 you also have foliage sprouting from her head

All are over exposed, as mentioned. Last shot is too busy and, as also mentioned, plants sprouting out of her head. But I don't think the planter looks good there either. That photo is also tilted. The berries can be fixed by isolating and blurring, but the fiance in the background is blurred too much. Third one has too much foreground distraction, would have been nice without that, but is also overexposed. First one is not so bad, but overexposed and the positioning of couple should be more to camera left, with more space on the camera right side of couple.

If you can re-shoot, that would be great! You can take all friendly comments you have read here, put them into practice and your shots will look great!

Yes, they are overexposed. However...I do think you did a great job with posing the young couple. I really like the second one where her feet are off the ground - you can see the joy. Don't be afraid to fill your frame a bit more, concentrate a little more on the subject. Keep trying!

There is so much wrong with these with the lighting, posing and location and things that it would cramp my hand to try and list it in a way that helps.

Here is my advice: Buy Wayne Radford's Ebook "Portraiture tools and Techniques" and purchase Roberto Valenzula's Creativelive webinar; "Location, Posing, Execution" and all the mistakes you've made here will be corrected and you can do better next time.

You have the right idea, just shoot, shoot and shoot more.

You learn by doing something over and over again until YOU think it is right.

Actually, you learn by learning what's correct...and then practicing that...if you practice incorrect things over and over again....you learn to do wrong things very well.

Thanks to all for your comments. I actually agree with everything that was said.
I didn't clarify all the exact details at first because I wanted to see what you all had to say.
The details are that I was actually a second shooter at this event.
A friend of mine who is the professional photographer actually did this shoot and I was along to assist for the most part. I did take these shots using his backup camera. I mentioned to him that I thought the locations were not the best choice due to the sun, etc but he kept shooting.
He was paid and I did it for the experience which was good but I have learned more from all of you - and you verified my thoughts as well. Now, I did not do any pp in LR or PS so I'm sure that would make some difference but not enough. Agree that for free these are great and we did capture the joy but they are paying so I'm not sure how his came out yet. I know he shot in raw and I'm assuming will be doing a lot of pp'ing! ;-) Again, thanks for all your comments...much appreciated!

Meant to add that yes, the shoot was done at 11am on a very sunny day. Not the best choice I agree...

I have to say that if your "pro" friend took shots in 11am sun with no scrim, shade, or anything then I'm wondering what kind of "pro" he is.
