It would have to be upside-down.

Interesting and good shots! What was your 580EX2 setting?

I was all over the place with flash settings. It went from 1/1 to 1/32. This is were I need to experiment for some reason the exposures would be good on one shot, but not the next. It had to do with where the flash was located on the cup. I mostly settled on holding the lens and cup with one hand while focusing with the other. The ant kept running around in the cup so I would focus in front of him and wait for him to walk into the focus plane, then take the shot. Instead of changing the flash setting when I got too bright, I would close down the aperture. I was amazed I could go to f/32 with 1/8 flash.

Thanks for the info, any ideas how this might work with a ring light pointed into the cup? I haven't made a diffuser yet for my 580, but thinking about it.

I'm thinking of a cup on the outside of another cup. The bigger cup on the outside has reflective material on the inside of it and the ring flash on the end. What do you think? Then the ring flash illuminates all sides at once.

I didn't know that ants had hairy butts. LOL I really enjoyed the shots and actually like seeing the seams in the background as it adds to the composition. Thanks for a good laugh. Nice work.

Sounds good! I will have to experiment with that. Just need to find the right large cup. However, if I'm using a ring light and the ring light fits inside of a large cup, a smaller cup inside the large cup would block the light I would think. Plus, I would have to have the lowest light the ring light will allow with all the reflection from inside the cup. Whatever the case, it certainly bodes well to experiment. We'll see.
