got a guy wanting to trade an old Canon Lens FD 50mm 1.8 for some prints of mine. Looks good, no scratches and no fungus. Problem is when I take the lens off the camera it closes down to about F/9 or so. When I put the lens on you will see the aperture open all the way up to F1.8. as I Twist it On. As I twist off the lens it closes down again. I fiddle with the two levers on the back of the lens but can't get the aperture to open up. Would make a great reverse lens for stacking if I can lock this puppy open. Anyone know how to do this. I have also tried turning camera on with aperture ring set to F1.8 but still closes when I take off. Has the aperture ring that adjust the f/stop but no worky for me.

You may need a FD to EF Adapter such as http://www.amazon.com/Zykkor-Mount-Adapter-Canon-Infinity/dp/B001D8X72G

Thanks St3v3M, I'm not mounting to a camera, just using backwards mounted to another lens. I have special ring for Nikon electronic only newer lens that don't come with the Aperture ring on the lens it's self. My older nikon lens I just adjust the aperture ring and they open and close with no problem. I understand All older lens with aperture rings you can control adjusting the ring. That's the reason they are popular with reverse lens stacking or reverse mount.

There is a small pin inside the locking ring. When you attach the lens it releases the apature so you can set it with the ring. You will have to jerryrig an old end cap cover and install it. You will have to cut out the center of the cap. Not hard to do. Then you can set the apature to any setting.

You have to use the one that goes on the apature end. Not the one that goes on the filter end.

fstop22 before you cut the cover on that lens do one thing first. Install the cover and look through the lens while turning the cover to the locked posistion the blades should open.

I figured it out. In the lens there is 1 pin you have to push at the bottom but up by the red dot on the top there is a little metal thing that looks like a pin but instead of pushing it you turn it clockwise about a quarter of a turn, the whole inside ring turns. Its hard to explane. Watch what turns when you put the cap on and turn it then you will understand. I pushed the pin at the bottom while I turned the inside ring clockwise 1/4 turn and the blades opened all the way.

That still requires the lens to be mounted for the aperture to work

I see the little pin you are taking about. I don't have a tool that small to turn the pin. I try pushing on it and it doesn't turn. Will see if I can find an end cap on ebay today.

I was able to open the blades on mine using two tweezers, one to push the pin and the other to turn the ring. It's not easy to turn you have to use some force but once is starts to turn you can let go of the pin and use both hands. If you still have problems getting it to work I will take photo's of the process to show you. You don't need a cover cap but it makes it easier. As far as the cap goes there is a special fd cap you need it has an arrow pointing to the red dot. There are two different kind of FD caps one with the arrow and one without. On my other 28mm lens the ring that turns is external not like the 50mm.

I must be doing something wrong. The lens is at about F9 when off the camera. I'm able to push the little button in across from the red dot and get the blades to close down, but not the other direction
