I just bought a Nikon D3100. Does anyone know which instruction book out there is worthwhile for me to read and learn more about how to use this camera to the fullest other than just read the manual comes with the package? Thanks.

Check this out. It's not a book but it will help you understand the different functions of your camera.

Thanks! I am on line and reviewing it now. Can wait to go out and use manual mode instead of auto.

Thanks. I read them both and I still can not work it out the right aperture, speed and ISO combination to take a good picture. I do not want to reply on auto shoot. I need a book full of examples I guess. :)

You might want to get Nikon D3100 for Dummies. It's NOT for dummies--it's just very detailed and gives examples and pictures. Read it with camera at hand.

Go to Ken Rockwell site. If he has a tutorial for D3100 it will be better than any book Anyway I have three (even the dummie book) and I learned more from his D90 insturctions than from all three books. - Dave PS He also thinks that the D3100 is a great camera and unless you have a specfic reason for a more expensive camera it's the one to get.

Hi,

Of course be sure to view the actual manual on the DVD (not the weenie paper one that comes with it) and the DVD video. The video is good but goes by real fast. (I am assuming the D3100 comes with a counterpart to the one that comes with the D5100).

Kelbytraining.com has a two hour tutorial on D3100. It is excellent. You can watch for free on his one day trial.

If David Bush's book on the D3100 is as good as his one on the D5100, its the keeper you need to study for the future.

The beautiful thing about the D3100 is that you can take great pictures with out out of the box. Just put it on auto and go.

My daughter-in-law got a D3100 a couple of months ago when I got my D5100. She hasn't done all the study I have but continues to take better pictures than me.

Of course when you are ready you can move on to the scene modes, P, A, and S, and all the other fun stuff you can play with.

Regards,
Larry Leach

I bought the Nikon D3100 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas and keep reading it over and over. There are so many features to this camera, which I love by the way, that it takes awhile to learn them. I am continually amazed by the power of this model camera. You will have fun with it.
