My daughter will be 12 next week - she has a flip (kodak) camera and we think the battery is dead - she wants a camera for her bday - please share your thoughts on something not too expensive and 12 yr old user friendly - she uses my 50d when we're out - like mommy like daughter - and no she's not getting a dslr (yet) ......thanks!

How about a less expensive 'Bridge' Camera. Lots of choices among the brands.

Go to Best Buy and you can handle them there.

Or how about 'Craigs List?'

Make sure whatever you buy has an optical viewfinder.

Great suggestion on the viewfinder.

Plenty of decent bridge cameras out there. Some are as expensive as a used DSLR body. Plenty of used ones (DSLR & bridge) on CraigsList if you don't want to spend that much.

The Canon PowerShot series usually has nearly as many features on the dial as my Canon DSLRs, that could be less expensive new. I don't know if they still put veiwfinders on them.

I just up graded from a Sony H-2 that takes wonderful pictures, even though it is only a 6MP camera. Still has a lot of the DSLR features but no changeable lens. I am sure that the price would be lower than any DSLR.

I would concur on the bridge camera idea, adding that you could probably pick up a high quality used bridge for under $100.

For example, the camera I cut my digital teeth on, the Minolta A2, is an excellent starter with 8mp, 7x zoom, and full functions. There's one on eBay currently bidding for $70.

My 11yr old daughter got her first camera for Christams and loves it

it is a Fulifilm S4200 14megapixel 24optical zoom (no digital zoom)

this was £112 from a store (but you could get a cheaper deal online after Christams - i have seen it at £99)

it has many of the functions of a DSLR with only half the weight - it has an viewfinder and an exceptional screen

wekk worth the money

perhaps you could pass on your current model and then upgrade,or at least buy something that allows you both to share the same equipment. Sounds like the beginning/ progression of a great relasionship.

Must agree with the Fujifilm Bridge camera suggestion. You will not get a more versatile, value for money camera for a start off in digital.

Easy question; tough answer. If she's serious about photography, don't aim too low. If the camera doesn't do enough for her, she will be disappointed and lose interest. You want something that will challenge her. You can get some excellent deals on eBay, just be sure to get a shutter count before you bid.

Look at some of the Nikon CoolPix...have a L120, 14mp 21x zoom...lots of bells and whistles to keep her busy...no manual settings tho..

Around $150 to $180

My 13 year old was always trying out my cameras and was in my photog bag when ever he could get his hands on it. I gave him my 8008 for Christmas that year to see if he would use it, he did. He loved using my D90 as well, so for the next Christmas I bought him a D70 off craigslist for a very reasonable price. He can use my lenses and we go out to shoot together, although not often enough. My Suggestion is to upgrade your D50 and give that to her, She gets her mom's beloved camera and you can get an upgrade and you can share lenses and time together.
