These three big boys and their mates can wipe out two suet cakes in less than two days. They receive a little help from the little woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc. but most of the damage is made by them! I buy suet cakes by the box but I don't complain because I feel privileged to have the these beautiful creatures to watch every morning from the reading chair in my living room. These photos were taken from that very chair through the double-pane picture window. I'm still playing with raw and I'm beginning to see advantage.

lol, makes one think doesn't it ? I bought a Meade lx80 mount and thats the box the tri-pod was in . its a rather large box but the picture has caught a lot of attention. After using only that picture a freind of mine sent me the photo of the ice house and the man sitting in that . I took both pictures and combined them to make the picture (avatar) I have now . Thank you for asking, its always fun about how some get there avatar .

Thanks, that means something coming from you. I'm going to FL soon so I can practice on really big birds and hopefully have a chance on some BIF's

We have pileated woodpeckers here but they don't come on our suet. Wish I could entice them over but they stay on the trees in the backyard.

Take a look at the board that the suet is attached to. I saw a similar set up at a birdfeeder store and decided to try to build one myself. It seems that the larger woodpeckers need to have that type of board to rest their tails on. That allows them to balance and to feel secure. Even though I put suet cages on both sides of the board it is rare that I see two of the large woodpeckers eating at the same time.
