Lafayette Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in New Orleans, was established in 1833. I find the tombs impressive even in their run down condition. I would like to share a few photos of the cemetery with you. I hope you enjoy them. Comments are welcome.

The whole cemetery must be like this with all the tombs above ground am I right? nice set so far, need more.

Yes, all graves are above ground in New Orleans. The city is below sea level. You can't dig a grave without encountering the water table.

I found out as well that in some of the older cemeteries coffins that were originally buried, floated out of the graves and were all over town when they had a flood!
Great set of photographs, maybe one of the London "Uglies" would do a set of pics of Highgate Cemetry which is the last resting place of Karl Marks and hundreds of famous folk.

The cemeteries in the southern part of Louisiana really are pretty. These in New Orleans especially so. They're like little cities. Great pics

I agree about the New Orleans cemeteries. I also like the colonial cemeteries of New England. Thanks for looking at my photos.
