"The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a Buffalo Grove atheist's final appeal in his lawsuit challenging the use of state funds to renovate an 11-story cross atop southern Illinois' tallest peak, ending the legal dispute spanning more than two years.

The nation's high court on Tuesday declined without comment to review Robert Sherman's request to hear his case involving the $20,000 grant given in 2008 to the 111-foot-high Bald Knob Cross of Peace near Alto Pass. Lower courts already had ruled that Sherman lacked standing to sue over the grant."

I'll bet it cost over $20K to fight off Mr. Sherman's litigation.

I'm not sure that God smiled, as He has the whole universe as a tribute to His glory. God doesn't need a court to rule in His favor.

However, since the cross is a man-made monument to honor Him on earth, I'm sure that believers are smiling over this ruling. Christian believers are always in a battle with those who would deny our freedom to worship God in ways that we desire.

A wonderful place to go, to see, to think and to enjoy. My last trip I was both pleased and amazed at the renovations, it had really fallen into disrepair. Hope you dont mind me adding a couple views on your thread.

Perhaps you good Christians should re read the Ten Commandments.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

2 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

No standing because the cross is on private land and owned by a non-for-profit corporation. Thus, it can be displayed.

Why don't you people read up on things.

a few years ago there dipsy-doodle from calif. who was protesting a cross/war memorial from WW1. It was in a desert in a s/w state and had been there for 70 or 80 years. He was taking it to court to have it removed. Why? Not religious as I recall, just a Lotus Land pos whose reasoning was "it offended him". He also said he'd never driven or would be driving on that particular road!!!!!!!!! Jeeeez, they walk among us and reproduce. I'm not aware if he was successful or not as I didn't follow up because I thought the liberal idiots on the Bench would agree with him.

And after I take control of the world and subjugate its population with mass murder and torture, I'll make sure you never have to see a swastika or a red star.

You're welcome!

We are told to be tolerant...But, if you're a Christian, don't expect the same respect of tolerance. Christians are being persicuted more and more while we are told to tolerate all other walks of life...Gnslngr...I don't expect we will ever agree on this either so don't even try. We know how you feel. My only question is this....Why don't Christians get the same respect that we are suppose to give to other groups? And if our faith offends you, why don't you just turn your heads the way you do for other groups.
I'm not a Jew, but if I see the Star of David, I am not offended. Why are atheist affraid of the cross or anything else that represents Christianity?
One more thing...Why are we as Christians not protected from hate speech as other groups?

I don't hate Christianity or religion, Eugene. Religion and Christianity hates me. They started it - they call me a non-believer as a pejorative term and denigrate my nontheism. Years ago, they tortured guys like me.

They put the symbols of their clubs and churches on my government buildings for my children to see, as though my government endorsed this stuff. They force my company to close on holidays (holy days) like Christmas and Easter, that celebrate something I don't believe in and cannot be convinced of. And as happy as you are in the cocoon of your faith I am in the freedom of my atheism, though believers always call my kind dour and depressed when we are, according to studies, much happier than those with faith.

I am a minority. I cannot openly seek the presidency of this country because my atheism would never be accepted by enough Americans to put me in. I am shunned by Christians because of my denial of their faith, and I am made to feel uncomfortable every time a prayer is publicly prayed and I stand silent.

So Eugene, if I seem intolerant of Christianity it is simply because Christianity has, time and again, proven itself to be intolerant of me. My hope is that you don't take it personally.

And no I, I certainly don't take it personally. And I would hope that you have never felt shunned by me. If a person calling themselves Christian is shunning you, they need to read the bible and realize that this is not what Christianity is about.
