MR Hood, Oregon Revealed

Kenny Loc: Oregon

It is not often in Oregon to get a clearer view of Mt. Hood that overlooks Portland. This time of year the 12,000 foot peak mountain is covered with snow and skiers.

The height assigned to Mount Hood's snow-covered peak has varied over its history. Modern sources point to three different heights: 11,249 feet (3,429 m) based on the 1991 U.S. National Geodetic Survey,[1] 11,240 feet (3,426 m) based on a 1993 scientific expedition,[6] and 11,239 feet (3,426 m)[7] of slightly older origin. The peak is home to twelve glaciers.[8] It is the highest point in Oregon and the fourth-highest in the Cascade Range.[9] Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt,[10] though based on its history, an explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated at between 3 and 7 percent,[11] so the USGS characterizes it as "potentially active", but the mountain is informally considered dormant.

Mount Saint Helens even opted in a mighty biased only a few years ago. We hope this does not portend something for Portland.

Nice shot of Mt Hood. I often see her rising in the northwest from where I live. Every time I go to Portland, I pass by the volcanic structure and marvel at how beautiful it is.

One of my best photos of Hood is located at this link:

It's a great view isn't it? Let's just hope it never blows its top.

Beautiful shot, but I'd crop out some of the sky, Kenny; then it would be a wall hanger!

Sailorsmom,

I am not particularly proud of this photo. It is not one of my best and not taken from the best view of the mountain. But, it was a rare clear day and I could not resist.

I must now wait until the next clear day and then try again.
