Is my lens toast?

I dropped my Canon 50mm f1.8 prime lens on the floor and the front element popped out. It looks like it should just snap back into place but it won't. Nothing seems to be broken or bent.
Probably not worth sending for repairs. Is it DIY fixable?

It would most likely, but I really don't know, cost you more to get it repaired then to get a new one.

It may just pop back into place. You just have to get it aligned just right. There may be a video or two on YouTube explaining this. I have fixed them before.

That has to be frustrating, I know.

I'd take it to a local camera store and get their opinion. They may even be able to "pop" it back in place on sitre depending on the store.

But strictly as a matter of curiosity: did your lens have a skylight filter or a hood when it was dropped?

Nope. Just lens caps front and back.

The same thing happened to me with this lens. I popped it back together and was surprised when it worked.

Fiddled with it, lined it up, laid it on my desk with the front element down, gave it a kill or cure hard whack with the flat of my hand and the front element popped back into place. Images are sharp and the auto focus and diaphragm seem to be working fine.

Glad to hear that.
Now pay yourself $125 for the repair service and save it for your next lens.

Cool repair job. I hope you got all the finger prints of the lens element.
