Did you take the images yourself? RAW images have a different thumbnail when viewed in windows explorer. Usually whatever your camera brand is has it's own default thumb image. Images (JPEF, GIF, PNG, RAW, etc) usually have a thumbnail of the default program that opens them; in thumbnail view of course. As well, you could hover your cursor over a file and the pop up will say the file type.
