OK this question is limited ,at least from my perspective on EF and EF-S mount cause I shoot Canon bodies.

What is your favortie lens and why?

Toss up between my 70-200mm F/2.8 and my 105mm Macro
I like the 70-200 because it does everything well from portrait to flowers to wildlife,
I like the Macro because when there is nothing obvious to shoot you can always find something with a macro.
Pretty much when the Macro is not on my camera my 70-200 is.

On crop sensor EF-S doing candid event work my favorite is Canon 17-55 2.8 be sure to put the lens hood on it.

At this moment in time my Nikor 28mm 2.8 because it's new and really neat reversed on my 50mm.

Overall my Tamron 90mm macro. Good for almost anything.

24-70 F2.8 L pretty much stays on my camera, really hard to beat the quality of the photo's. 100-400 4-5.6 L is second. I do like telephotos so wish I could afford longer. TNmike

Edit. Both are EF series so if I move to full frame they will work then also.

hangman45,

Thanks for responding, I have the 70-200 f2.8 and I love it for the sharpness, fast focus and reach or versitility, but the weight! I guess I am just lazy. I find that I don't ues it as much.

Thanks!

That 17-55 2.8 is one of Canons most popular lens I guess based on how many they sell. I don't have one and have never used one. I have the 17-40 f4 and I like it a lot. Just got the 24-105 f4 with the 6D and will see if that becomes my favorite over the course of the spring and summer.

Thanks for sharing!

PhotoDan,

Can you please explain the "reversed" part, I have never heard of doing that?

A macro lens is on the list next, I make sure I check out the Tamron 90mm in a Canon mount!

Thanks and I look forward to hearing about reversing a Nikor 28mm 2.8!

TNmike,

I could not afford a f2.8 when I got my wide zoom, I went with the f4. Everyone raves about the f2.8, any plans to get the new II with IS? Big $$$

I have been looking for something, a Prime maybe, that has more reach than my 70-200 f2.8. I have the 1.4X & 2.0X but photos with the 400 f4 blow my socks off. Now all I have to do is win the loto or sell my truck to buy one!

Thanks for sharing.

The 100-400 4-5.6 L, I do mostly nature/wildlife, 95% of the time. Great reach, sharp/clear pix from 100-400, works well with a monpod...

Curtis, my 24-70 non IS works fine for me and I'm an old phart and not all that steady. The IS one would be nice but not in my budget either. As always what I would like to have and what I can afford are usually two different things. Now WHEN/IF I win the lottery!!!!!
:D :D :D Powerball is up there for Wednesday so maybe, just maybe. TNmike

My current favorite would have to be my Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. Like Hangman said, you can always find something to shoot with a macro. It has a focus limiting switch so the A/F doesn't have to search through the whole focal range when up close, and the focus ring is also the auto/manual focus switch.

Did I mention that it takes great pictures? :)

JLRplsFL,
Thanks for posting your favorite lens.

I have not looked into that model, must be very versitile with the zoom range. I 'll review it when I get some money for my new telephoto.

I currently have a 70-200 f2.8 with the 2X but it is heavy and long with the 2x on. someday!!!

..........................

Oh oh, you're in trouble now. Reversing lenses is ADDICTIVE. It is said to be the cheap way to do macro photography but it is great, getting up to 10x shots.

There are adapters that let you screw one lens reversed onto another (ex. 29mm reversed on a 50mm giving you approx 2X).

A regular lens takes something big and makes it small to fit the camera format (fx, dx etc) while reversing the lens makes something small very big.

Look under macro photography on this site and you will soon be ordering adapters (for less than $3) to attach everything to everything. You can actually get an adapter to reverse the lens right on camera.

The picture here was with a 28mm reversed on my 90mm macro. Tons to learn and fun. Hope to see you in our macro room. Doug and the guys are really sharp on this stuff and I have learned tons in the past month.
