I find Terns to be some of the most gracefull birds in the air. It is a shame that the bird was so far away because the position of the bird is beautiful, the exposure is good, and you even got a highlight which helps define the eye. I usually reject pictures of the black hooded species of terns when the eye is essentially invisible because it lacks a highlight.
Keep working at it and find areas where you can get a little closer. I have had my greatest success when the Terns are actively feeding. Things to look for are pools at low tide that concentrate the fish and therefor the birds. In several of the Wildlife refuges I visit, brackish water impoundments are formed with dikes with roadways on to of them. At intervals there are pipes connecting them throughthe dike. As the tide runs out, the Terns gather at the outlet side and dive for the concentration of fish there.
