Wanted to try the effect "Bokeh" but my lens only goes down to f4 so this is the best i could get.

I love the first one as well, partly because of light on the figure. Any way to illuminate the trio and still get the background you want? Actually, was the shot taken through glass? I think I see reflections.

Thanks Linda, the light was moved behind a glass door trying to make it a bit softer, even with a diffuser it has cast a reflection.

photo 2- far any glossy subject you should avoid frontal lighting which will give reflections. try again!
