Yesterday, I visited the Fullerton Botanic Garden, where I observed several Monarch butterflies in the air. Temperature was in the 70s. Checking my favorite Milkweed patches, I found a few bushes with about a dozen Monarch caterpillars of several different sizes. Surprisingly, I also found a Monarch chrysalis, within a day of eclosing. Monarch chrysalis are normally green, turning clear in the last 24-hours before eclosure. You can easily see the orange & black wing pattern through the clearing chrysalis shell.
I also had to capture this image of a Red Admiral, ready for retirement. I know it is not a macro, but I wanted to share with you, this old & haggard veteran.
i have never seen one of those
Thanks. Very interesting to be able to see the Monarch wing patterns.
Very Nice , felt sorry for the Red Admiral ,its really had a hard time .
Very nice I like the Monarch chrysalis the best. The old guy looks very close to retirement. I can't wait for the Living Deserts butterfly exibit to open this spring in Palm Desert.
