So finally I have 5 minutes to myself and construct a flash diffuser for my 580EX flash. The only problem is the complete lack of anything to take pictures of (apart from a seashell and a fir cone). 2-minutes in the dark (in the snow) gets me a rather confused woodlouse from the woodpile (he went straight back after his photographic debut).

So here's my first (quick) effort. Hand-held Canon EOS 7D at ISO 100, with 100mm macro lens 1/250-sec at f/16.

I know he/she's a bit out of focus but I am amazed by the blackberry eyes - I love this already (my wife is rather less keen).

Not too shabby! Your focus is good; your DoF is a bit narrow (to be expected).

I suggest increasing to ISO 400, which will allow you to back-off your speedlight output a bit, which may sharpen your capture.

Thanks very much! I absolutely cannot wait until spring! My son and I really enjoyed chasing this guy around the piece of wood he was on!

The diffuser material (all I could find) is a piece of milk carton plastic. I think it is quite good as a starter. I tried bubblewrap and that was OK too.

Try white paper towel, and moving your softbox as close as possible. See http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-3.html#1516031

Thanks Tinisbum - I've always loved 'Dillos.
Thanks Nikonian72 - I didn't think it through too much as I wanted the subject back in his woodpile before he warmed-up in the house.
I'll try your suggestions. The one time I scour the house for a housefly and there isn't one - no spiders either...

The front of my diffuser head sits exactly in line with the front of my lens hood at 45 degrees to the lens so is no more than 3 inches from the diffuser to the subject. Does that sound about right?

Nice!

You know, there's no known vaccine for "photographilia macrolitis"

Coffee filters also work good as a diffuser material another thing that helps with the DOF is to try to get the whole insect straight across because the part in focus is from side to side.

What a great idea. Thanks. Just had a go but can't find the "browse" button on the site in the profile section. Any ideas.

I have posted a square-cropped and reversed woodlouse. Save to your PC, then go to "My Profile", top of this page to add avatar image.
