This photo was taken Fri 01/18/13 at the Planting Fields Arboretum in the town of Oyster Bay, NY. It was 80+ degrees in the greenhouse and the warmth brought back memories of the summer.

"The name "Planting Fields" comes from the Matinecock Indians who cultivated the rich soil in the clearings high above Long Island Sound."

Just a question, why f18? Does it have to do with Macro?

I shot at f/18 to achieve depth of field, as the shape of orchids makes it difficult to get parts of the flower in focus. The lens used was a macro lens. 8-)

It is a lovely shot and entirely in focus with great color. I have not done much macro, and nothing with a specific macro lens. I did not know you had to have apeture that high to acheave a large enough DOF for a shot like that.
Learn something every day!

Thanks Curtis, but actually, even at f/18, there are still parts of the orchid which have a soft focus. It's usually okay with flowers to not have everything in sharp focus depending on what you wish to achieve. Some of the most beautiful bloom shots that I have seen have a soft focus. Again, thanks for taking a look and commenting. 8-)

Love the Orchid shot. They are a real challenge to hold DOF because of the structure of the blooms. I was thinking of starting an ongoing Orchid String. What do you think?

Thanks LoneRangeFinder. I was hoping to come across some insects in the greenhouse but except for one tiny critter, they were nowhere to be found. An orchid string sounds fine to me, it might last for a time. 8-)
