Info on the Canon EOS M camera

For all of you experts at the UHH, does anyone have any information and/or opinions on the Canon M camera. How does it stack up to the other mirrorless cameras out there? I was thinking of, perhaps, getting it as a second body (smaller and lighter) to go with the other Canon lenses that I already have, rather than getting a different camera and having to buy another set of lenses. Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance.

I own a Sony NEX-7 that I use as my personal/vacation camera and have an adapter for my EF lenses that gives me aperture control but not AF.

My opinion is that the Canon M is a late 1st generation entry into mirrorless small form camera field.

I owned a NEX-5 prior to the NEX-7 and based on looking at the M it has the same weaknesses as the NEX-5:

1. No optical view finder.
2. Slow auto focus.
3. AF hunts in low light.
4. Menu driven system settings that can drive you bonkers if you are skilled with the buttons on a Canon pro or prosumer body.

For me a lot of that was corrected in Sony's NEX-7 but it is still not preferct.

I'm waiting for Canon M Gen 2 or 3 which will I'm sure will address the optical view finder and slow focus deficiencies.

Getting AF back for my Canon lenses would be nice.

Do yourself a favor and pass on it (from all the reports that I've read, the autofocus is sloooooooooooow)...if you want a mirrorless camera, I'd opt for the OMD EM5 by Olympus. The 5 axis stabilization is a game changer that no other camera has. If its smaller that you want the epm2 that I own is a fabulous camera (same sensor as the OMD)
As for your existing lenses...

Looks nice. Bummer that you can't use the pile of EF or EF-S lenses we have. EF-M is what they call it. An adapter would likely require a piece of glass to go from EF to EF-M as the lens is closer to the sensor.

I'v decided to pass on it but also to keep an eye on the next few iterations. You *can* get an adapter allowing you to use EF lenses and I'd welcome something small as an addition to what I have.

It would never be my primary camera as it isn't going to be developed into a top-of-line solution. Not to say that some post-SLR platform won't emerge in time.

You may also find, check this because I have no experience with this camera, that your EF and EF-S or L lenses may not work with this camera. I believe the lens mount is different.

Also consider that I, along with many others, have no respect at all for
EVIL cameras. They are way over rated and way over priced. Fact is,
most pros will tell you, they just a pocket toy with no view finder that just happens to change lenses. For me, I'll stick with my dslr cameras from Canon.

MILC is the correct acronym that should be used. As for your opinion that they are just toys...just because they are small, doesn't mean that they won't spin circles around a traditional dslr. Slap the 25 f1.4 or 45 f1.8 on the omd, and take it for a spin...there's a reason why it won the camera of the year.

Reviews were not good as the other replies indicate.

Take a look at the metabones website for a standard adapter for Sony Nex
Cameras,
they have a converter (well made) for your canon lenses and the Sony Nex 7, is a 24 meg camera. They also have a new converter under very heavy review and being well anticipated called the speed booster..
Take a look under the dpreview.com news items, a lot of discussion there
I Just bought a used Nex 5N, the booster adapter and I'm looking forward to putting my Canon lenses onto a smaller body with some anticipated interesting results.

Thanks for all your input. With that plus the online reviews, I am definitely going to wait until the many issues with the M are settled, if ever. The Sony and Olympus do look inviting. You folks are the best.
