The first two images are regular photos. Third image is a macro.

Move closer!
Turn OFF your A-F.
Set lens to MFD.
Move entire camera/lens combo in-&-out towards subject to find focus.
At focus (MFD) take photograph.

This is the best way to understand minimum Focusing Distance & Minimum Working Distance. I personally use A-F at or near MWD, but many macro-photographers do not.

Your focus on fly (image #3) is right on time. Download & enlarge this crop. Note fly's hairy tongue and hairy eyes!
But note that the DoF is so shallow, that hairs between eyes, and hairs behind eyes, are OOF.

The blur are hairs pointed right at camera lens, exceeding DoF. You will definitely capture better results with a dedicated macro lens.

To help crank your aperture down to f/22 or smaller. If your just above and angle down you will get the front of his face and eyes closer to the same plane of focus. Right now to much is sticking forward of the eyes, Get above and focus down on this,30 degree angle, Hope this helps
