This is one of the statues that are carved out of the mountain, within a grotto that was also carved out of the mountain, and illuminated by an opening high in the outer wall of the grotto.
Notice the scale of the statue compared to the photographer at the lower left.
There are about a hundred carved figures in that area of Datong, China, of varying sizes.
